About this Degree Psychology is one of the most popular majors at UGA, and offers students a broad, scientifically-based education applicable to a wide variety of careers. Psychology is a field that studies processes areas as diverse as clinical behavior problems, child development, workplace violence, self-esteem, the effect of nutrition on vision, racial prejudice, memory, how people make decisions, anxiety disorders, cognition in primates, and the effect of different drugs on neurotransmitters in the brain. In fact, the UGA psychology department has faculty members studying all of these types of issues, and many more! Psychology is the scientific study of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Work in our department ranges from the study of neuroscience and genetics, to organizations and cultures, to understanding and treating mental illness – and everything in between. Psychology Major with Neuroscience Emphasis What you will learn We work from the American Psychological Association’s five goals for undergraduate majors: Knowledge base in psychology; Scientific inquiry and critical thinking; Ethical and social responsibility in a diverse world; Scientific communication in psychology; Professional development DESIGN OF CLASSES Most intro and major courses are taught by Psychology faculty, but some Psychology courses are taught by students in the graduate Psychology program. Psychology class sizes vary greatly. While intro courses and 3000 level courses often have 150 to 300 people in them, once students begin taking their major courses the class sizes begin to go down. Major courses can range from about 15 to 100 students with an average of about 35 students. We also offer an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the Gwinnett campus. General Research Information: AT UGA, undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in ground-breaking research, often as part of a team of graduate students and faculty. In fact, many students can earn academic credit while working under an experienced faculty mentor by taking PSYC 4960H or working directly with the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO). Criteria for selection are: (A) grades and (B) other evidence of scholarship and interest in psychology such as research reports, research proposals, term papers, community service related to psychology, and other evidence of promise in the field. The award carries with it a cash prize of $500.* The William T. James Award Offered to the outstanding senior major in psychology. Criteria for selection are: (A) research reports and research proposals, (B) term papers, (C) community service related to psychology, (D) grades, and (E) other evidence of promise in the field. Names of award recipients will be inscribed on the William T. James plaque. Winners will also receive a certificate acknowledging their accomplishment, and a cash prize of $100. Judge Horace B. Russell Prize Offered to a major in psychology for the best written work in psychology. The manuscript may be either empirical or theoretical. A $200 prize will be awarded to the winner. More Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards Student Organizations PsiChi Employment Information Employers: Individuals with advanced degrees in Psychology can pursue clinical and counseling careers in hospitals, schools and other public institutions, and private practice. They can pursue research and teaching careers at universities and colleges, research institutions and other settings. Those with undergraduate degrees in Psychology enter jobs in many fields, including human resources, sales and customer service, and administrative functions.
