Research Interests

My research uses behavioral economics and neuroeconomics to understand addictive behavior. The principal focus is on alcoholism and nicotine dependence, but I am also interested in pathological gambling and the novel concept of “food addiction.” Behavioral economics integrates concepts and methods from psychology and economics to understand people’s preferences, choices, and consumption behavior. It is particularly well suited to study addictive behavior, which is inherently a form of overconsumption. Neuroeconomics further integrates cognitive neuroscience to understand how the brain encodes and executes choices, both healthy and unhealthy. In addition, an important aspect of my research is that it applies a translational approach, using methodologies that are consilient across levels of analysis, from basic research to clinical and policy-related research. A significant emphasis in my lab is in understanding the roles of craving, impulsivity, and drug demand as determinants of addictive behavior. I am also very interested in genetic determinants of addictive behavior, in particular, intermediate phenotypes, and strategies for enhancing behavioral and pharmacological interventions in this area. More information about my research program is provided on my laboratory webpage.
