Research Program

Research conducted in the Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology Laboratory uses a learning-based approach to study alcoholism, drug addiction, and other forms of addictive behavior. One major focus is the application of behavioral economics, which is a hybrid of modern operant theory and microeconomics. A second focus is on the contributions of associative conditioning to addictive behavior. These approaches are applied to diverse aspects of addictive behavior, such as craving, impulsivity, and the development of novel treatments. Research in these areas includes neurobiological research using functional neuroimaging, human laboratory research, clinical research, and applied research. An overarching theme is the importance of translational research - using research at multiple levels of analysis to improve the understanding of a phenomenon and its clinical applications. A schematic below indicates a number of the laboratories foci and their reciprocal interactions.
